Lam says DAP’s constitution requires all members to be of legal age.
KUCHING (March 19): Claims circulating on social media that the Democratic Action Party (DAP) Sarawak has underage members are completely untrue, said George Lam.
Addressing the matter at a press conference here today, the DAP Socialist Youth (Dapsy) secretary said the party’s constitution requires all members to be of legal age.
“I think there are some issues arising in social media, not officially from any party, that we have underage members.
“Just to clarify, all members of DAP must be above the age of 17 as per our party constitution,” he said.
Present at the press conference were members Daphne Chong, Chong Hong Hien, Lesley Chong, and Jordan Soo—all in their 20s.
“We are relatively younger compared to the other youth parties in Malaysia, so maybe that’s why this issue arose,” he added.
Lam added it was unfair for youths involved in politics to be singled out because of their age or perceived lack of experience.
“Just because we are young people and, of course, have less experience, it does not mean that we cannot do things for our good state.”
He said DAP is committed to empowering young leaders and encouraging more youth participation in politics.
