KOTA KINABALU (Oct 8): The return of Parti Solidariti Tanah Airku (STAR) president Datuk Seri Panglima Dr Jeffrey Kitingan from Kuala Lumpur — after reportedly meeting with Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim — has sparked widespread political speculation in Sabah ahead of the upcoming State Election.
Community activist Alphonsus Felix Manjin said Jeffrey’s move has raised questions about STAR’s true direction, as the party is increasingly seen as drifting away from the core opposition bloc.
He said Many observers view his visit to Kuala Lumpur as a clear signal of his willingness to cooperate with the federal government — a move that could potentially split opposition votes, especially in constituencies with a majority of non-Muslim Bumiputera voters.
“Several STAR grassroots leaders are reportedly disheartened by their president’s actions, describing them as inconsistent and opportunistic. They noted that Jeffrey had previously been outspoken in his criticism of Anwar’s leadership, but now appears to be seeking reconciliation.
“This development is also expected to directly impact the strength of the opposition bloc, as voters may become increasingly uncertain about which party truly represents Sabah’s agenda in the coming election — whether it is Warisan, Gagasan Rakyat, or STAR,” said Alphonsus in a statement on Wednesday.
At the same time, he said many local leaders assert that Jeffrey’s meeting with Anwar demonstrates that STAR has lost its direction and founding principles. They allege that the party is rapidly losing grassroots support and is now relying on a “divide and rule” strategy to maintain its political relevance.
With Sabah’s political landscape growing increasingly volatile, Alphonsus said STAR is expected to face significant backlash if it continues on this uncertain and opportunistic path.
