SIBU (July 14): Outstanding Sijil Tinggi Persekolahan Malaysia (STPM) students should return to Sarawak after completing their higher education and establishing their careers, Bukit Assek assemblyman Joseph Chieng said.
He said the state’s future depends on young generation who are equipped with knowledge, strong values and a commitment to serving their communities.
“I hope that one day you will return with your knowledge, experience and talents to give back to your hometown and Sarawak.
“The future development of Sarawak depends on young people like you who are equipped with knowledge, guided by strong values and committed to bringing about positive change,” he said during the SMK Methodist STPM 2025 excellence incentive presentation ceremony here.
A total of 38 outstanding SMK Methodist students who achieved a cumulative grade point average (CGPA) of 3.00 or above received incentives amounting to RM10,800.
Chieng said the incentives were not merely a recognition of academic achievement but also an encouragement for students to continue striving for excellence.
He stressed that the awards also served as a reminder that dedication, hard work and perseverance are appreciated by the community.
Chieng expressed appreciation to parents, teachers and the school’s management for their unwavering support in helping the students achieve academic success.
He encouraged the younger generation to pursue knowledge with passion, embrace innovation, think critically and remain lifelong learners.
“The knowledge, skills and values you acquire today will shape not only your future, Sibu, but also the future development of Sibu, Sarawak and our nation,” he said.
In conjunction with Sarawak Day on July 22, Chieng said the occasion should inspire Sarawakians to reflect on the state’s history, appreciate its unique identity and unity and renew the commitment to building a stronger, more inclusive and prosperous Sarawak.
“As we celebrate this special day, let us continue to uphold the spirit of ‘Segulai Sejalai’ (together in harmony), moving forward in unity regardless of our differences, respecting one another and working collectively for a better future,” he said.
He also reminded the public, especially the younger people, to fly the Sarawak flag and actively participate in Sarawak Day celebrations as an expression of pride in the state’s heritage, cultural diversity and shared values.
