KOTA KINABALU: A 24 year-old man who had wanted to tie the knot with his girlfriend was killed instantly when the Perodua Kancil he was in as a passenger crashed into a lamp post near Anjung Selera at Likas Bay here yesterday.

The victim was identified as Abnil Hassan, a construction worker who lived at Kpg Kalansanan, Inanam.
He was said to have died of serious head injuries after he was thrown out off the back seat of the car and landed on the roadside.
The driver of the car, Awang Asmer Siter, 20 and a female passenger Puteri Leha Azman, 19, both suffer serious injuries and at the time of reporting, are still unconscious.
Two other backseat passengers fled the scene after the accident.
City police chief Assistant Commissioner Ahmad Sofi said, police were investigating into the case.
It was learnt that the group had attended Awang’s sister’s birthday party on Saturday and was on the way to Abnil’s house at Kg Kalansanan when the accident happened.
Awang suddenly lost control of the vehicle and rammed into a lamp post at around 1.25am.
The impact of the collision had caused the vehicle to rebound more than 10 metres away and was almost torn apart.
The Queen Elizabeth Hospital 1 (QEH1) and the Public Defence Department immediately dispatched an ambulance each to the scene of the accident after receiving the distress call.
Abnil’s body was also taken to QEH 1 for a post-mortem.
It was learnt that Abnil had planned to go to the mosque with his mother, Jum Sarun, to attend Hari Raya Haji prayers and to tie the knot with his girlfriend after the celebration.
Jum, who is in her 40s said, Abnil went out around noon on Saturday to meet his friends.
As there was a heavy downpour and out of concern, she had given her son a call at 9pm on Saturday reminding him to be home early.
She was awakened by a call at around 2am yesterday from Abnil’s friend, who informed her that her son had been killed in the accident.
Jum was devastated when she saw her son’s body at the hospital.
