SIBU: Fong Kui Hong showed resolve and determination after a three-year hiatus to stage a triumphant comeback in this year’s Mr Sarawak bodybuilding championships.

After clinching the lightweight title, the 36-year-old beat eight other category winners to bag the coveted ‘Champion of Champions’ crown at RH Hotel here on Sunday evening.

“I last competed in 2013 — I even got the chance to represent Sarawak (in Mr Malaysia) in Penang that year.

“After that hectic year, I decided to take a long break to give my body time to recover. It was a carefully-planned move because I psyched myself that when I decided to return, my comeback should come with a bang,” the local-born entrepreneur and fitness trainer told The Borneo Post here.

He said he had been preparing for Mr Sarawak event since August last year, with the objective of once again representing the state in the national championships.

“I did some researching during the hiatus, particularly on diet. Like I said, I aimed for a successful comeback and that would need detailed planning,” he said.

Prizes for the annual state championships were given out by Sibu Resident Hii Chang Kee who was accompanied on stage by Sarawak Bodybuilding Association honorary secretary Andy Ismail, Sibu Division Bodybuilding and Weightlifting Association president Chia Soon Cheong and Miri Division Bodybuilding Association chief Jamilah Ismail.

Meanwhile, Sarawak will send 12 representatives to this year’s Mr Malaysia bodybuilding championships to be hosted here next month.

According to Andy, the quota was set by the Malaysian Bodybuilding Federation (MBBF) for all state contingents.

“Nevertheless, I can assure Sarawak bodybuilding fans that we will definitely send our best athletes, with the goal of repeating our feat as overall champion of the competition in 2014 and 2015.

“Right now, we are still discussing on the line-up,” he said when contacted yesterday.

He reminded all athletes to ‘stay clean’ throughout the season.

“Previously, it (doping test) was conducted randomly. For this edition, the governing body together with Adamas (Anti-Doping Agency of Malaysia) are going all out. I warn all athletes to stay clean — a quick victory is really not worth the four-year ban and RM2,000 penalty,” he stressed.
