KUCHING: The number of crime cases recorded between Jan and July has dropped compared with the same period of time last year. Kuching police chief ACP Roslan Bek Ahmad said the crime index registered an 18.99 per cent drop, or 252 cases, given that the total number of crime cases in the last seven months was 1,075 compared to the 1,327 cases the year before. He thanked all officers for their commitment to fighting crime besides urging them to keep up the good work when launching the police monthly assembly at Tabuan Jaya Police Station here yesterday. Roslan then handed out certificates of appreciation to officers who excelled in their job. A cake-cutting ceremony was also held for those celebrating their birthdays in August. At a press conference, Roslan said he would look into a complaint that recently went viral on Facebook, as a complainant took to the social networking site to air discontent about the poor police response to a recent break-in attempt in Matang. “A complainant is not happy with Gita police station for not offering first response. We will take this case seriously and there could be some misunderstanding. “As you all know we have recently redrawn our jurisdictions and some areas in Matang fall under Padawan instead of Gita. Some people may not know, but whenever a complaint is received, police must act and go to the scene. In this case, the officer at Gita could have informed Padawan. “This is the first response we must take. I need to hear what the parties concerned have to say before any action can be taken. I hope there will be no such incidents in the future,” he said. Roslan appealed to the community to not circulate such complaints on Facebook as it would tarnish the image of not just the Royal Malaysia Police but also the country. He opined that there were better means to address and solve an emergency while believing that a Facebook post would not help one solve a problem. “Do you not love your country? Is it not better to use a proper platform like giving me a call to solve the problem? If you call me and I still do not take action, then you can complain directly to the prime minister.” To a question, he said he had to find out whether a formal report had been lodged by the complainant. He, however, was relieved that it was a failed attempt. “To me, if police officers do not respond to a complaint, then they are wrong. But first things first, complainants must report it to the nearest police station for quicker response time. “For instance, if a case happens in Sungai Maong and if you want to report it to Batu Kawa, we will not say you cannot do so, but it is all about response time,” he added.
