THE Dewan Rakyat was told yesterday that claims for goods and services tax (GST) refund totalling RM800 million are still pending due to certain factors. Finance Deputy Minister Datuk Chua Tee Yong said claims that contained doubtful details or did not meet the criteria were among the reasons why the refunds could not be processed within 14 days as specified. “In April, 7.8 per cent of the claims were processed within 14 days, while in December, the percentage rose to 66.6, but there are still some hitches in the payment of GST refunds to the companies concerned,” he said. He was responding to Datuk Liang Teck Meng (BN-Simpang Renggam) during the question and answer session. Liang had noted that some GST refund claims took three months to be processed and wanted to know the action taken by the ministry to resolve the delay. Chua explained that some claimants could not be contacted in the seven days after issuance of a notice to provide confirmation, or had failed to respond to queries from the Customs Department. He also attributed the delay to incomplete banking details. According to him, there are two time frames for the GST refund process, which are, 14 working days for online claims through MyGST, and 28 working days for claims submitted manually or by hand. Nevertheless, he said, certain steps had been taken to improve the process, such as expediting refunds for completed forms and increasing the number of officers to deal with the workload. Chua said the companies were subjected to a risk profile to avoid false claims. — Bernama
