Raise price of face masks at your own risk, traders warned SIBU: Traders thinking of cashing in on the hazy situation by hiking the price of face masks indiscriminately may be asking for trouble. The Ministry of Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism (MDTCC) state director Wan Ahmad Uzir Wan Sulaiman warned that errant traders could be slapped with a hefty fine under the newly enforced Price Control and Anti-Profiteering Act 2011. “They can be fined up to RM100,000.00 upon conviction as their actions cause hardship to the people,” Wan Ahmad told The Borneo Post yesterday. He said this when asked if action could be taken against traders who hiked prices of masks at their whim and fancy to take advantage of the current situation. He said if traders hiked the price of masks unreasonably, the ministry would carry out a thorough investigation to identify the reason for doing so. “Traders will need to provide a detailed explanation as why they raised the price of the product,” he explained. Wan Ahamd revealed that they would then submit their findings to a committee to deliberate on the next course of action. He also gave assurance that their enforcement officers were constantly on the ground to keep tabs of the market situation. Towards this end, he reminded traders to toe the line and adhere closely to the regulations. Turning to the consumers, he reminded them to be smart consumers and to learn to compare prices. He also advised them to contact the ministry if they knew of any hike in the price of goods. Meanwhile, Wan Ahmad was pleased to note the full compliance from traders in the state on to the Hari Raya Price Controlled Scheme 2011 from Aug 23 till Sep 6. “There was no complaint or report on any traders flouting the regulation by our enforcement officers in the state throughout the duration of the scheme,” he disclosed.
