Customs seizes 6.9kg Syabu worth RM1.7 million at KLIA

NILAI: The Customs Department seized drugs believed to be syabu weighing 6.9kg worth RM1.7 million at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) since the past three days.

Deputy Director-General (Compliance and Enforcement) Datuk Mohamed Khalid Yusuf said the first incident took place at about 11.45pm on Monday, when enforcement officers found 3kg of syabu worth RM750,000 inside a bag belonged to an Iranian man.

“Based on the travel document, the suspect, who is in his 20s, was travelling from Dubai,” he told a news conference at the department’s branch office here yesterday.

He said in the second incident at about 10pm Wednesday night, enforcement officers found   Syabu weighing 2.4kg worth RM614,000 in a bag belonging to an Iranian man in his 30s who had just arrived from Dubai.

“In the latest arrest about 9am today, we seized Syabu weighing 1.5kg worth RM375,000, also from an Iranian man. He arrived at KLIA from Istanbul,” he said.

He said the three suspects had been remanded for a week to facilitate investigation.

Meanwhile, the Kelantan Customs foiled an attempt to smuggle 33,156 cartons of cigarettes worth more than RM1 million in Kampung Parit, Limbat, near Kota Baharu Wednesday, but no arrest was made.

State Customs director Mohamed Salleh said 18 members from the enforcement division raided a shophouse after a three-hour stake-out and found the cigarettes.

“The value of tax involved is RM2.2 million,” he told a new conference.

Meanwhile, the Melaka Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) in Kuala Linggi thwarted an attempt to smuggle 2,180 cartons of cigarettes worth RM188,000 in the Strait of Melaka last night. – Bernama
