Nur Adilla joins national school chess team

MUKAH: Local chess prodigy Nur Adilla Mohamad Junaidi, 13, of SMK Three Rivers Mukah has been selected with five other students from Sarawak to represent Malaysia in the ASEAN Chess Tournament in Vietnam in June this year.

The others are Samuel Ngieng Chew Sheng, 14, of SMK Methodist Sibu, Affiq Shahmi Mohamad Shaiden, 14, (SMK Tunku Abdul Rahman, Kuching), Kiu Toh Shen, 17, (SM Sains Kuching) in the boy’s category while Alya Afiqah Alias, 14 (Kolej Tun Dato Tuanku Haji Bujang Miri) and Aidi Faridah Mohamad Shaiden, 17 (Kolej Tun Datu Patinggi Abang Haji Abdillah, Kuching) will accompany Nur Adilla in the girl’s category.

Sarikei emerged overall champion at the Sarawak Schools Sports Council (MSSS) Inter-division Chess Tournament at Dewan Suarah Mesra Mukah here on Saturday.

The three-day tournament saw Sarikei’s boys and Sibu’s girls triumphed in the U12 category.

Sarikei again emerged champion in the Boys U15 category while the Girls U15 category was won by Bintulu. The Boys U18 category was won by Kuching and Sibu emerged champions in the Girls U18 category.

MSSS chief technical officer for chess game Rosli Arshad, deputy organising chairman and head of PPK unit in Mukah District Education Office Patrick Philip Moss, principals, headmasters, teachers and students were also present during the prize giving ceremony.
