KOTA KINABALU: Police personnel have been urged to relive the force’s glory days in sports.

Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar said facilities would be provided to encourage police personnel to improve their sport performance.

“The police used to have eminent players in the 70s and 80s in football, badminton, sepak takraw, athletics, rugby, hockey, and netball,” he said at the presentation of the IGP Cup Golf Tournament 2014 here Sunday night. His speech was read by Deputy Inspector-General of Police Datuk Seri Mohd Bakri Mohd Zinin.

Khalid said the main objective of the competition was to unearth talents and prepare police golfers for national and international tournaments such as the World Police and Fire Games.

The Royal Malaysia Police bagged eight gold, 14 silver and 10 bronze medals at last year’s tournament in Belfast, Northern Ireland, apart from lifting two gold, four silver and four bronze medals in the golf championship. Commending police athletes for their achievements, he said their triumphs helped raise the stature of the Royal Malaysia Police in sports internationally.
