In the 11pm incident, the deceased identified as Sail Mohd and his fellow countrymen – identified only as Ben, 26, and Saptari, 23, – were asleep in a ground floor room when they were attacked.

It is learnt that the victims could not see their attackers as the electricity supply had been cut off.

Ben suffered serious injuries in the attack, while Saptari managed to escape with just minor injuries.

The trio had just begun working on renovations at the bungalow for a local contractor for a week.

One of the victims managed to call their boss, who later rushed them to Miri Hospital.

It is learnt that Sail died while on route.

Ben is said to be in stable condition, while Saptari has been detained to facilitate police investigation.

Miri police chief ACP Gan Tian Kee said the case was being investigated under Section 302 of the Penal Code for murder.

Police found a blood-stained machete, which is believed to have been used in the attack at the scene.
