KOTA KINABALU: Ten undergraduates, one of whom is believed to be a Universiti Malaya (UM) student leader, Fahmi Zainol, were taken to Kota Kinabalu district police headquarters (IPD) to have their statements recorded for taking part in an illegal assembly at the Gaya Street roundabout here yesterday.

The students were, however, allowed to return on the same day after giving their statements to the police.

City police chief, ACP M Chandra, said six men had assembled at the Gaya Street roundabout and were giving speeches using a microphone and speaker at around 11.30 am. Pamphlets were also distributed during the speeches.

Chandra said the impromptu ceramah ended half an hour later and all the students, including four individuals, believed to be the organisers of the assembly were taken to Kota Kinabalu IPD for documentation and to record their statements under the Peaceful Assembly Act 2012.

Chandra added that no notice for the assembly has been issued by the police.

“No arrests or seizures were made during the incident. All the students were allowed to leave at 3.45pm (on the same day) after their statements were recorded.”

Chandra said the incident would be investigated under Section 9 (5) of the Peaceful Assembly Act 2012. Fahmi had previously caused controversy by inviting de facto Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) leader, Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, to speak at UM.
