KUCHING: Sukma XVII bronze medallist Clement Ting Su Wei posted a mesmerising top score of 9.51 points in the men’s daoshu to hand host Sarawak its second gold medal on the first day of the 25th National Wushu Championship at SJK Chung Hua No. 3 Alumni Hall yesterday.

The silver was won by Malacca’s Tan Cheong Wan who scored 9.49 points, only finishing 0.01 points ahead of the bronze medallist from Sarawak Clement Thian Fung Seng.

Earlier, the women’s daoshu saw Sarawak’s Lee Hui Xian outclassing the rest of the 12-competitor field with her 9.41 points to claim the state team’s first gold in the championship.

Second and third were Ooi Bao Chi (9.34) and Choon Yue Qi (9.28) respectively while another Sarawakian Cynthia Chang Mei Shiun could only manage a ninth placing with 8.20 points in her debut appearance in the national meet.

However, Fu Wen Jie bagged Sarawak’s first medal when she finished in third place in the women’s jianshu after scoring 9.02 points to finish behind Malacca’s Tammy Tan Hui Ling (9.37) and Negeri Sembilan’s Pang Pui Yee (9.10).

At the end of the competition, Sarawak’s medal haul was two gold and two bronze medals to sit in second place in the medal tally standings.

Malacca got off to a great start with four gold, three silver and one bronze medal, with the other gold contributors being Tan Wee Sern (men’s taijijian), Sydney Chin Sy Xuan (women’s taijijian) and Ng Chih Yu (women’s traditional quanshu).

In third spot are Negeri Sembilan with one gold, five silver and three bronze medals, followed by Penang (1-1-2), Perak (1-1-0) and Kuala Lumpur (1-0-0).

One hundred and 12 exponents from 12 teams including the national team are vying for top honours in the pre-Sukma championship that will end tomorrow.

It is jointly organised by the Wushu Federation of Sarawak (WFS) and Sarawak State Sports Council (MSNS).
