KAPIT: Staff from the Prime Minister’s Department (JPM) came here yesterday with paint, brushes, furniture, chairs and fans in hand to give Methodist Iban Church Sungai Amang here a facelift.

Methodist Iban Church Sungai Amang is a double-storey wooden structure that was built many years ago. Located within the compound of SK Sungai Amang, it served as a place of worship and as a multi-purpose hall for SK Sungai Amang pupils.

Political Secretary to the Chief Minister, Jefferson Jamit Unyat, said the presence of the JPM staff under the `Bersama-sama’ initiative proved that the government was giving all religions due attention.

“This programme has created far-reaching impacts on the local community.

“That is why today we see overwhelming response from the folk of Rumah Richard Engking, Rumah Achan Enang, Rumah Edison Buged, Kampung Sawang and Kampung Bulan.

“This church means so much to this people,” said Jamit.

Among the about 100 people present at this gotong-royong event were political secretary to the Chief Minister, Wilson NyabongIjang, the church’s chairman Seta Engkah, the `Bersama-sama’ programme’s officer-in-charge, Naasir Taff, SK Sungai Amang headmaster John Lam, Kapit police chief ASP Gregory Emelio and Pastor Reverend Bakar Biau.

In his speech, Seta thanked JPM for coming all the way from Putrajaya to help repair the church and to give it a new coat of paint.

“We’re very thankful to JPM. Our church was built a long time ago. We plan to build a new one, but for the time being, we need to carry out repair work. This means you (JPM) came at the right time.”

At the function, Jamit handed over three minor rural project (MRP) grants from Deputy Minister of Rural and Regional Development, Datuk Alexander NantaLinggi. A sum of RM10,000 went to SK Sungai Amang, RM5,000 to the church and another RM5,000 to Kapit Police Social Welfare Club.
