KUCHING: The United Association of Food and Beverage Merchants of Macao invite locals to bring their unique gourmet dish and delicacies to the 16th Macau Food Festival.

The food festival will be a perfect venue to showcase and introduce local food and culture to Macau and also tourists from Mainland China, Southeast Asia and the rest of the world.

The food festival will be held from Nov 11 to Nov 27 in Macau’s Sai Van Lake Square, next to the Macao Tower.

This festival is co-organised by Macau Restaurant Workers’ Union, Associacao de Cozinheiros de Culinaria Chinesa de Macau, Associacao de Empregados de Restaurantes Padarias de Macau and Macau Journalists Association and sponsored by the Macau Government Tourist Office, Macao Foundation and the Civic and Municipal Affairs Bureau.

At a briefing here yesterday, The United Association of Food and Beverage Merchants of Macao president Kenneth Lei U Weng said the first Macau Food Festival was held in 2000.

With participation from local residents, tourists, peers and with the support and sponsorship from the Macau Government Tourist Office and Macao Foundation, the festival was a great success throughout the past 15 years, he said.

The food festival will also coincide with the world-renowned Macau International Fireworks Display and the Macau Grand Prix, which in turn will attract tourists to Macau.

According to Lei, hundreds of well-known restaurants from Macao will gather at the food festival each year to promote the local cuisine.

They are then divided into five food zones namely Chinese Restaurant Zone, Asian Delicacies Zone, European Delicacies Zone, Local Delicacies Zone, and Dessert Zone.

Apart from the local delicacies, the organising committee would invite overseas food merchants to the festival.

For the past 15 years, the organiser had invited Mainland China, Taiwan, Malaysia, Thailand, Japan and Korea to join the event.

They had a ‘Korean Village’ last year with Korean gourmet and cultural performances as well.

Besides food, there will be game booths and live stage performances every night to create a wonderful carnival event.

Those interested to participate should register by Aug 9.

Also present at the briefing was the chairman of Malaysia Koo Soo Restaurant and Chefs Association Goh Ah Seng who urged food and drink makers to take this opportunity to promote local food to foreigners.

Goh also announced that the association will be organising the Malaysian Golden Chef Competition and 2016 Asia Pacific Kuching Master Chef Challenge Trophy at Imperial Hotel Kuching this July.

He said 50 chefs from Malaysia will participate in the Malaysian Golden Chef Competition, while another 11 chefs from China, Korea, America, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Macau, Singapore and Malaysia will participate in the 2016 Asia Pacific Kuching Master Chef Challenge Trophy.
