Sukma golfers steal the thunder

KUCHING: Sukma golfers stole the show at the grand final of the Sukma XVIII Sarawak Golf Challenge at Kelab Sarawak yesterday by sweeping the top three spots in the Category A competition.

Topping the score chart was Sarawak Sukma golfer Aziel Teo Ken Yi with a gross score of 72 strokes and his third-placed teammate Steven Hii six strokes further back.

Both golfers represented the Samarahan Country Club (SCC).

The surprise first runner-up was Nur Eliana Ariffin from Tiara Melaka Golf and Country Club who is a member of the Malacca Sukma XVIII women’s squad.

She was one stroke behind the champion.

Three other SCC golfers also did well in the competition to cap finishes in the top 10, with Mohammad Lokman Mustaffa in sixth place (79), Johari Aman seventh (81) and Waili Abang taking the 10th spot (83).

In Category B (handicap 7-12), SCC’s Magit Semong was declared the winner after he returned a gross score of 77, to beat Cpt Muhaiyar Ysusuf (80) from the Borneo Golf and Country Club and his club mate Peter Tan (81).

The winner of the VIP contest was Deputy State Secretary Datu Misnu Taha who recorded a score of 37 stableford points to beat Mohd Rizal Mohd Razi and Dato Abdul Jalil Abdullah into second and third spots respectively on countback (ocb).

Fourth to sixth placings were occupied by Jackson Lim (36), Dr Surgeon (34) and Datu Sarudu Hoklai (31).

Meanwhile, Minister of Youth, Sports and Solidarity Dato Sri Michael Manyin Jawong welcomed companies like MS3 Golf Sdn Bhd to help Sarawak organise sports events to create corporate awareness that Sarawak needs sponsorships to organise big sporting events.

“To run this Sukma XVIII, we estimate that we need about RM50 million and that is the one we need today.

“Fortunately, we have lots of sponsors like RapidKL, TM and Malindo Airlines,” he said.

“This is the biggest sporting event in Malaysia.

“To organise any event of this nature, we definitely need a lot of money and we need a lot of people to come and support us,” he added.

He later closed the event and gave away the main prizes.

Also present were Assistant Minister of Youth and Sports cum Assistant Minister of Housing Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah and MS3 Golf Sdn Bhd president Dato Mohd Tiar Sharif.
