Workers left homeless after fire razes their wooden residence

MIRI: A wooden temporary workers’ house in Ladang Taniku, Jalan Pujut 7, Permyjaya here was razed to the ground during a fire earlier today.

Miri Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) chief Law Poh Kiong said no injuries or casualties were reported in the incident.

According to him, Bomba received a visit from a complainant who came to Lopeng Fire and Rescue Station at 10am to report the incident.

“He informed us that the fire had started since 7.30am today. It was reported that the residents of the house had tried to put out the fire using 20 units of fire extinguishers and two units of water bowsers but the fire could not be extinguished as it grew bigger,” said Law.

Law added that four personnel from the Lopeng Fire and Rescue station led by senior fire officer Ellai Bidang rushed to the scene, located some 21km from the fire station.

“At the time of the incident, all residents in the worker’s house had gone down to the palm plantation.

“Fire damaged 100 per cent of the six-door temporary structure house measuring 15 x 20 feet for each door of the workers’ house, leaving 18 foreign workers homeless,” he added.

The Bomba team managed to control the fire and the operation ended around 11.30am.
