SMC promises to keep beautifying Sibu

SIBU: The Sibu Municipal Council (SMC) vows to continue its effort tobeautify the town to attract both investors and visitors alike.

Giving the assurance was its chairman Datuk Tiong Thai King, who added that as the local authority, they had always tried their bestto step up efforts in ensuring a clean, beautiful and sustainable town over the years.

“A clean and beautiful town improves the quality of living of its people and it also gives good long lasting first impression to tourists,investors and visitors,” Tiong said at the Countdown 2010 at Sibu Town Square here on Thursday.

“People would want to make a return trip only ifthey are impressed by the town and this is where our efforts reap immeasurable rewards,” he said.

Tiong pointed out that despite faced with constraints in peat soilconditions and limitation in resources, they were still able to sustain their efforts to make the town a comfortable place to live in.

He attributed this to thesmart partnerships and synergy among the authorities, nongovernmental organisations and the community at large.

“It is important for the people to realise that development of the town  requires concerted efforts from both the authorities and communities,” he said, adding that communities inSibu had made their names known for their partnership and synergy with the  government.

Towards this end, he said the town has continued to provide opportunities for all people to live, work and play without much hassle.

For the New Year, he added that they would build on their past and present success, embracing thechallenges and opportunities ahead to move towards a progressive Sibu City.

Among those present were Minister of Environment and Public Health Dato Sri Wong SoonKoh, Deputy Transport Minister Datuk Robert Lau, SMC deputy chairmanDaniel Ngieng, secretary Hii Chang Kee and Sibu Resident Sim Kok Kee.
