Partial solar eclipse on Jan 15

KUCHING: A partial solar eclipse on Jan 15 is expected to be seen throughout Malaysia.Planetarium Sultan Iskandar yesterday revealed that the partial solar eclipse is part of the annulus solar eclipse seen from Maldives, India and Burma up to China.

Sarawak will be able to view a half solar eclipse that day, expected around 3.40pm and ending at 5.30pm.

The planetarium said this through a press statement. It also tells people how to view a partial solar eclipse without damaging their eyes namely through a pinhole projection.

“The simplest way to view a partial eclipse is to look at the Sun’s image projected onto a piece of paper. Poke a small hole in an index card with a pencil point, face it towards the Sun, and hold a second card three or four feet behind it in its shadow. The hole will project a small image of the Sun’s disk onto the lower card.

“This image will go through all the phases of the eclipse, just as the Sun does. Experiment with different hole sizes. A large hole makes the image bright but fuzzy; a small hole makes it dim but sharp,” it said.
