SUCCESSFUL: Naim Cendera Holdings managing director Datuk Hasmi Hasnan hands over a cheque for RM1 million to Taib for Miri Malay Charitable Trust Board.

The donations were handed over by its managing director Datuk Hasmi Hasnan to Chief Minister Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud, who received the money on behalf of the recipients at the board’s Hari Raya gathering here on Thursday night.

Taib was pleasantly surprised by Naim’s generosity.

“Normally, when I attend charity functions, I think of giving something from the government, but tonight I got quite a lot from Datuk Hasmi.

“This is a great reward for me in seeing more people getting richer,” he said.

He said this was a reflection of the success of policies and plans laid down by the government to shore up the capacities of Bumiputeras and non-Bumiputeras.

The vision was to bring everyone up to the next level, and the transformation of Hasmi (who used to earn only RM700 monthly as a staff member of the Land and Survey Department) into a corporate figure underscored the success.

Also present at the gathering were Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Dr George Chan, Assistant Minister of Infrastructure Development and Communications Datuk Lee Kim Shin, Sibuti  MP Ahmad Lai, state assemblyman Aidan Wing (Lambir), Rosey Yunus (Bekenu), Andy Chia (Pujut) and Miri Mayor Lawrence Lai.
