KUCHING: Bukit Siol, which houses the Kuching North City Commission (DBKU) building at its peak, is set to be transformed into a proper extreme sports venue.

Science Technology and Innovation (MOSTI) Deputy Minister Datuk Fadillah Yusuf pointed the proposal at the Siol Extreme Mountain Bike Challenge yesterday, and added that this is due to the geographical surface of the hill which suits extreme sports such as mountain biking.

“Judging from the response by participants of this annual event, it is feasible to turn this venue into a proper extreme sports location.

Apart from maintenance and improvement works, this effort will also include landscape beautification,” said Fadillah who is also the Petra Jaya Member of Parliament.

The transformation should also see other extreme sports venues for motocross, skate boarding, BMX and wall climbing, he said.

Fadillah later on urged the local authorities to set up a special committee to look at the proposal from all aspects before being forwarded to the state government.

“With the elevation of this site into a proper extreme sports location, I believe that it will become a catalyst towards a healthy society,” he said while adding that it will indirectly contribute to the state tourism promotion.

The two day event which ended yesterday saw 56 participants from Sarawak, Brunei and Peninsular Malaysia competing in five categories; Men 18-years below, Men-45 above veteran, Women’s open and Men’s open and downhill.

Organised by Sarawak Cycling Association (SCA) and DBKU, the event was sponsored by Trienekens Sarawak Sdn Bhd, Telekom Malaysia and Allexcel Trading Sdn Bhd.

Also present yesterday were DBKU deputy mayor Jumaini Haili and SCA deputy president Cr. Irwan Zulkarnain Hasbi.
