SIBU: Sibu Municipal Council (SMC) will launch its Love Earth Day campaign through a cycling programme around town on April 22.

Speaking at a press conference yesterday, SMC deputy chairman Daniel Ngieng said it was also part of council’s effort to encourage people to cycle.

He said the council would organise two nights of earth day programme this year – April 22 and April 23 – at the Sibu Gateway.

“On the first day, we are going to cycle around the town to launch the Love Earth Day Campaign and we invite Sibu people to cycle with us.

“Just bring along your own bicycle and join the fun night,” he enthused, adding that those interested could call Philip Ting on 019-8577010.

Ngieng said he estimated about 100 people to participate for the cycling programme that night.

He said the two-day campaign would see the collection of recyclable items during the daytime at the gateway, stage performances and stalls at night.

He said the performances, such as fashion shows, musicals, and so forth would focus on environment as its theme.

“Of course, the performances during the two nights are relying heavily on organisations,” he said.

Meanwhile, there would be stalls from various government departments and non-governmental organisations.

In conjunction with Earth Day, Junior Chamber International (JCI) will be organising activities such as colouring, fashion show competition and much more.

“This year’s Love Earth Day Campaign would be a festival-like celebration in Sibu,” he said.

Also present at the press conference was SMC chairman Datuk Tiong Thai King.
