KUCHING: The 10-day campaigning period for the forthcoming state election is fine with Chief Minister Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud.

He said he was never bothered by the duration because it had no bearing on the election strategy to be adopted by the State Barisan Nasional (BN).

The Election Commission (EC) announced at a press conference at a hotel here yesterday that nomination would be held on April 6 and polling on April 16.

“It does not matter. I leave everything to the EC as they know better.

“Otherwise, if I state my preference it would undermine their authority,” Taib told reporters after officiating at the ‘85th National Conference of State Islamic Council Leaders’ at Riverside Majestic Hotel here yesterday.

Taib added that the State BN trusted the EC and thus would not want to interfere in the decision making processes.

On another matter, Taib stressed that the BN machinery must concentrate on their strengths when campaigning.

They should not rely too much on the weaknesses of the Opposition.

His comment was made in relation to the Opposition’s problems in seat allocation and the sex scandal video which surfaced a few days ago.

It is alleged that the person committing the lewd act in the video resembled a top Opposition leader.
