KUALA LUMPUR: Home Minister Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Tun Hussein today advised all parties, including the media, not to be emotional over a religious issue or to speculate on it.
Referring to the Utusan Malaysia report on alleged attempts to make Christianity the official religion, which has been adamantly denied by leaders of the religion in Malaysia, he said: “Let us not be emotional about issues concerning religion and race, and allow the authorities, especially the police, to investigate the case.”
He was also commenting on a police report lodged in Penang this morning which contained the same allegation made in Utusan Malaysia.
Hishammuddin was also asked to comment on the statement by the MCA today which considered inadequate the action of the Home Ministry to issue a letter of reprimand to Utusan Malaysia for the report.
The minister said the action was not an issue, and what was important was that police be allowed to investigate the matter first.
He also said that his ministry would monitor all reports by the media to make sure that they did not publish anything that could cause panic among the public.
Meanwhile, Deputy Inspector General of Police Datuk Khalid Abu Bakar said the report lodged in Penang this morning was a “variation” of a previous report.
He declined to give details of the report or to identify the person who lodged it.
“I appeal to all not to speculate on the issue or to exaggerate it,” he told reporters at Bukit Aman.
He said that police would carry out a thorough investigation of the matter. – Bernama
