PUTRAJAYA: The Court of Appeal will hear on July 13 the prosecution’s appeal against the acquittal of lawyer Karpal Singh on a charge of uttering seditious words against the Sultan of Perak.

The date was fixed after case management before Court of Appeal deputy registrar N Kanageswari yesterday.

The hearing of the appeal was initially fixed for June 14 but was rescheduled to July 13.

On June 11 last year, Karpal Singh, 70, was acquitted and discharged by the Kuala Lumpur High Court for allegedly uttering the seditious words at his law firm, Messrs Karpal Singh & Co, in Jalan Pudu Lama in Kuala Lumpur between noon and 12.20 pm on Feb 6, 2009.

High Court judge Azman Abdullah freed the veteran lawyer without ordering him to make his defence on the charge after ruling that the prosecution failed to prove the ingredients under Section 3 (1) of the Sedition Act 1948, which leads to the tendency to incite hatred, insult or disloyalty to the Ruler.

He was of the view that the DAP national chairman was giving his opinion by referring to provisions in the Perak state constitution and legal provisions
from court decisions. — Bernama
