Temenggong Lau not in favour of Federation of Seven Clan Associations

SIBU: The Chinese community is well represented by the United Chinese Association (UCA), hence having another organisation with overlapping roles might spawn confusion, and create a split in the community.

Temenggong Vincent Lau Lee Ming told The Borneo Post yesterday that he personally felt the formation of the Federation of Seven Clan Associations might cause confusion among the Chinese community.

“It may eventually create division among them (Chinese community). You see, they are also members of UCA and form part of the umbrella organisation. If they need to form another organisation for some reason, it must be relevant to their objectives or what they intend to do.”

Lau said UCA had all this while played its role of representing the Chinese.

He was asked to comment on the call by the Federation of Chinese Associations Sarawak (FCAS) – the umbrella body in the state, for the Federation of Seven Clan Associations to change its name. Secretary of FCAS David Goh said the name change would stop all the confusion and conflict churned out.

Lau opined that while people had the liberty to form organisations, it was important to ensure it did not divide the community and create disunity.

“This is something not desired,” he stressed, urging all quarters to work together.
