SUCCESSFUL ACQUISITION: BCorp has acquired the licence to use Border’s trademark on a perpetual basis from the liquidators of Borders Group Inc, USA.

KUALA LUMPUR: Berjaya Books Sdn Bhd (Berjaya Books), the operator of Borders Malaysia, now owns the Borders trademark in perpetuity within Malaysia following the successful acquisition of the brand.

The company said its parent company, Berjaya Corporation Bhd (BCorp) had acquired the licence to use Border’s trademark on a perpetual basis from the liquidators of Borders Group Inc, USA.

In a statement here yesterday, Berjaya Books, which is a wholly-owned subsidiary of BCorp and the franchisee for Borders since 2005 said it had the unreserved right to operate both brick-and-mortar as well as internet-based retail businesses using that trade name.

Berjaya Books’ chief operating officer Yau Su Peng said the acquisition would reflect BCorp’s confidence in the Borders’ brand equity.

Currently, Borders Malaysia has six outlets as well as two Borders Express  stores.

On September 26, the Bankruptcy Court of New York approved the acquisition, thereby putting Malaysia in the unique position of being the only country in South East Asia where Borders still operates. — Bernama
