SERDANG: The Malaysian palm oil industry would benefit more if the Australian government manages to quash the anti-trade palm oil bill for compulsory labelling, said Plantation Industries and Commodities Minister Tan Sri Bernard Dompok.

He said it was unfair to target Malaysian palm oil products.

However, he was happy the Australian government would oppose the bill.

“I think we have a really good chance here and it will become stronger when Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard also rejected it,” he said.

He said this at a prize-presentation ceremony for Malaysian Timber Council’s Photography Competition 2011 here yesterday.

Dompok said he also had talks with some of the members of parliament and had wrote to a few independent members and they had expressed their support.

“I will be going to Australia soon and will meet some industry players there,” he said.

In a report on Thursday, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak said he welcomed the Australian government’s rejection of the proposal for compulsory palm oil labelling. — Bernama
