SHAH ALAM: A police officer, with the rank of chief inspector, was sentenced to two years’ jail and fined RM40,000, in default two years’ jail, by the Sessions Court here yesterday on two counts of bribery.
Judge Azhaniz Teh Azman Teh handed down the sentence on Ahmad Rambli, 40, after finding him guilty of committing the offence.
However, she allowed a stay of the sentence pending an appeal at the High Court and maintained Ahmad’s bail at RM6,000.
Ahmad was found guilty of soliciting a bribe of RM5,000 from a clerk, K Thiagu, 29, as an inducement to reduce the amount of heroin and detention period of his brother, K Vimaraj, 21, who was held for a drug related offence.
Ahmad, who was the investigating officer in the case, was charged with committing the offence at the Narcotic Investigation Department, Klang district police headquarters about 7pm on Feb 5, 2007.
He was sentenced to two years’ jail and fined RM25,000, in default a year’s jail, for the offence.
On the second count of agreeing to accept RM3,000 from Thiagu for the same purpose, Ahmad was sentenced to two years’ jail and fined RM15,000, in default a year’s jail.
The offence was committed at Restoran Al-Bidayah, No. 34, Jalan Sri Sarawak 19, Taman Sri Andalas, Klang, about 11pm on Feb 20, 2007.
Azhaniz Teh ordered Ahmad to serve the jail sentence concurrently from today.
Prosecuting officer from the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission, Adzuan Adzhar, prosecuted, while Ahmad was represented by lawyer Aminuddin Mohd Ramli. — Bernama
