KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia Airlines (MAS) is the official airline sponsor for The World MatchRacing Tour’s (WMRT) prestigious season-ending finale, the Monsoon Cup.

The event would be held at the Ri-Yaz Heritage Marina Resort and Spa, Kuala Terengganu, from November 22 to 27.

MAS’ regional senior vice president sales Malaysia, Azman Ahmad said in a statement, “It is a privilege for MAS to be associated with the Monsoon Cup, an international sailing regatta, that attracts the top performing sailors from around the world.

“I am sure the 2011 event will outshine last year’s and we can expect yet another thrilling race that will be fought to the finish.

“We are pleased to be part of this strategic collaboration and partnership with T-Best Events, the organisers of the Monsoon Cup.

“We aim to leverage on this initiative to position our brand growth presence, against the front-end and corporate air travel market.”

Azman said the sponsorship was also MAS’ contribution towards the government’s Economic Transformation Programme entry point for the tourism sector.

The programme aimed for more international events to attract tourists and provide a boost to Malaysia’s tourism industry.

“Our association with reputable sporting events such as this, is certain to promote Terengganu as an international destination for sport, business and tourism,” he said.

In the strategic partnership as official carrier, MAS would provide premium air transportation for the sailors, the race committee, international umpires, and members of the media flying in and out for the Monsoon Cup.

“We are delighted with the support given by Malaysia Airlines to help boost the event.

“This deal is a clear indication of the global appeal of the Monsoon Cup and its opportunity as an avenue for sport sponsorship,” race advisor to the Monsoon Cup,  Datuk Peter Gilmour said.

MAS and its subsidiaries had been a consistent participant in Malaysia’s sport tourism activities, as the official airline, for events such as Malaysian Open Golf tournament, the World Amateur Inter Team Golf tournament, Le Tour de Langkawi and the recently-held CIMB Asia Pacific Classic.
