ARRESTED: The 50-year-old suspect being led to the police station for questioning following his arrest.

KUCHING: An ingenious thief was able to steal a laptop from under the noses of staff at a convenience store after convincing them he was a computer technician.

The incident took place around 6.30am yesterday when a man entered the 24-hour store at Jalan Matang and told the two personnel on duty that he had been sent by their manager to inspect the outlet’s supposedly faulty laptop.

According to a source, the man put up an elaborate show of ‘inspecting’ the laptop in the presence of the two workers, before informing them that he needed to bring the laptop back to his shop to fix the problem.

He then left with the device, while the unsuspecting personnel continued on with work until their manager showed up later and asked where the laptop was.

It was only after the manager said he had never sent for a computer technician to inspect the laptop that the workers realised they had been fooled, and immediately lodged a police report of the incident.

In a separate case, police yesterday arrested a man who was believed to have splashed corrosive liquid on a divorcee back in October.

The 50-year-old odd-job worker was picked up at his house at Kampung Seratau around noon following a tip-off and was detained for further investigation.

He was alleged to have splashed the liquid on the face of the 40-something divorcee at her apartment unit at Mile 13 Kuching-Serian Road after she rejected his repeated requests to go out with him.
