Motocross sport will attract foreign tourists, says Dawos

KUCHING: Motocross sport has the potential to be one of the events for community based tourism industry in rural areas.

Datuk Dr James Dawos Mamit, Deputy Minister of Tourism Malaysia said that motocross races which would be generally held in rural areas and its racing track were far from the busy city would attract foreign tourists because of its greenery.

“If the event is fully publicised it will attract foreigners not only as participants but also as spectators, and they like to come here because of the vast forest surroundings,” Dawos said in his opening speech before he flagged off the race at Stungkor Motocross Park in Lundu yesterday.

Dawos added that when tourist visit the rural areas, they would need accommodation because they would prefer to stay in surroundings of forest.

“Here the local people can set up Homestay to accommodate tourist and introduce the local food and culture to them. Thus it will help to generate their incomes,” he explained.

He further informed that his ministry would be willing to assist tourism participant to set up their ventures.

“But of course you need to apply to us for the setting-up capitals,” Dawos informed.

Meanwhile yesterday 36 riders, including 10 from Indonesia, three Sabahan and two from Brunei took part in Stungkor Motocross King and Scrambler Master 2012,” at Stungkor Motocross Park, Lundu.

The events are categories into Stungkor Motocross Novice (Sabah and Sarawak), Stungkor Motocross King Open, Stungkor Scrambler Bash (Sabah and Sarawak Closed), Stungkor Scrambler Master Open and All Terrain Vehicles (ATV).

At press time Jong Tze Ping led the pack throughout the 12 laps race of Stungkor Motocross King event for podium finished.

The race which was sanction by Automobile Association of Malaysia (AAM) was organised by Sarawak Motocross Club (SAMC) in collaboration with Mas Gading Parliamentary constituency.
