Education staff reminded of integrity charter

KUCHING: State Education director Abdillah Adam tells all Education Department personnel to always remember the integrity charter to stay clean and professional in discharging their duties.

He said yesterday civil servants must be aware of the charter that spells out clearly for them to stay away from any abuse of power, immoral behaviour as well as corruption, as they are asked to read it out aloud in many formal functions.

“Of late, there are many incidents on improper behaviour, which involve staff of Education Department from headmasters to teachers to warden. I feel disappointed whenever I read the related news reports or complaints.

“As civil servants, we need to always remind ourselves of the integrity charter of public service and to view it as our important guideline,” he said this at the presentation ceremony of Excellence Service Award 2011 for Samarahan Education Office at Tun Abdul Razak Teacher Training College here.

He stressed that one could only claim to be ‘excellent’ if one were highly disciplined.

He, therefore, urged the 182 recipients of the award to hold on strongly to the principle of integrity and to become a good role model for others.

Abdillah, who will retire in two years, said helping the state to improve its ranking in UPSR and PMR in the national level was his biggest wish before retirement.

“I felt sad to know Sarawak was ranked quite low in terms of overall performance in UPSR   and PMR. I really hope that before my retirement I can see Sarawak elevate from the low ranking.”

On Samarahan Education Office, Abdillah challenged the office to make the division the best in the state in the coming government examinations.

Samarahan Education officer Mahli Rosli had earlier on urged educationists in the division to work closely with their schools to realise their dream to be the best in Sarawak in terms of overall performance in UPSR and PMR.

“For the past five years, we had seen a tremendous improvement in UPSR where we were as good as Kuching division. Our performance in PMR had increased as well.

“Such performance was attributed to the high commitment and dedication of our teachers. Let’s work together to make Samarahan Division the best in the state.”

Mahli said he hoped the recipients would continue to deliver excellent service up to the day they retired.
