Jailed two years for stealing handphone

SIBU: A 23-year-old man was sentenced to two years’ jail by the magistrates’ court here yesterday after he pleaded guilty to stealing a handphone.

Simon Jari was charged under Section 380 of the Penal Code, which provides for a maximum 10 years’ jail and a possible fine.

In mitigation, Simon, from Miri, said his family had yet to know he had committed the crime.

He asked the court to send him to Miri Prison.

His request was granted.

Simon stole a handphone from Helman Ahmadi on May 25 at 3.50am at a worker’s residence in Pahlawan Road, and was arrested at Kampung Nyabor Road at 2.30pm the same day.

In the same court yesterday, Shariman Ruspee, in his 20s, was also jailed for two years after he was found guilty of dishonestly receiving stolen property.

Shariman was found in possession of a hair razor, two scissors, a shampoo bottle and hairdryer in a motel at Foochow Road at 10.30am on Dec 14, 2011.

The charge came under Section 411 of the Penal Code, which provides for a minimum six months’ jail and maximum five years’ jail or fine or both.
