JOHOR BARU: The Sessions Court today sentenced a relief constable to one day’s jail and fined him RM10,000 in default six months’ jail for accepting a bribe.

Judge Mohamad Haldar Abdul Aziz passed the sentence on P. Prathab, 24, of Taman Nusa Bestari, Skudai, here, who pleaded guilty to having received RM1,000 from T. Ghanasundri in Taman Pulai Jaya on March 29 last year as an inducement to help release her husband, P. Ganggu Naidu, from the Ulu Choh police station lockup.

Prathab, who was not represented by counsel, appealed to the court to impose a lenient sentence as he had been unemployed since and had to take care of his mother and a schooling younger sibling.

He was charged under Section 17(a) of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission Act 2009. Section 24 of the act provides for a jail sentence of up to 20 years, a fine of up to five times the bribe sum or RM10,000, whichever is higher.– Bernama
