KUCHING: SMK Trusan has emerged champion in the ICT presentation competition with their winning presentation entitled ‘Kebaikan dan Keburukan Internet’ in the last leg of the two ICT Camps conducted by the Rural ICT Guided Home-Based Technopreneur (RiGHT) Programme for 2012.

The ICT Camp was an initiative to narrow the urban-rural digital divide in Sarawak.

It was jointly organised by Sarawak Information Systems Sdn Bhd (SAINS), Rural Development Ministry (KPLB), ICT Unit of Chief Minister’s Department and Lawas District Education Office.

The three-day ICT Camp was participated by 79 secondary school students from SMK Lawas, SMK Merapok, SMK Sundar and SMK Trusan. The ICT Camp with the theme ‘Bringing IT to You’ was held from Oct 29 to 31 at SMK Lawas.

ICT Camp is an educational activity that provides platform to create awareness among the younger generation in rural areas on the importance and pervasive applications of ICT.

At the ICT Camp, students are exposed to essential ICT services, ICT tools and software resources through a combination of lectures, demonstrations, group case studies and quizzes.

Participants like Vanessa Joelyn, a form three student from SMK Trusan, had one of the most memorable experiences working in a team in preparation for the presentation.

“I really enjoyed the experience working together as a team,” she said. “Before this, I have never really familiarised myself with ICT, but after joining this camp, I liked it and enjoyed the fun way of learning IT and computers,” she related her experience.

Speaking at the closing ceremony, SMK Lawas principal Dr Hassan Hasbollah reminded the students to embrace ICT if they wanted to progress, otherwise they would be left behind.
