KUCHING: An unemployed man was sentenced to six months imprisonment by the Magistrates’ Court here yesterday after he pleaded guilty to assaulting his wife last week.

Magistrate Maris Agan sentenced Awang Azizul Abbone of Jalan Sultan Tengah, and ordered that the custodial sentence take effect immediately.

Awang Azizul, 35, was found guilty of assaulting his wife by bashing a plate on her head, pulled her hair, and kicked her on the leg and backside.

He committed the offence in their house at Jalan Demak Laut at about 2.30pm on Nov 5.

Maris convicted him under Section 323 of the Penal Code, which carries a maximum one year jail upon conviction.

The victim, Noraishah Abdullah, 23, said in her statement that prior to the assault she had advised her husband to look for a job, and this lead to a heated argument.

Sensing that Awang Azizul was on the verge of losing his temper, she decided to go to the living room with their daughter to watch television.

However, their daughter accidentally stepped on a remote control, lost her balance, fell down, and cried. Seeing this, the accused blew his top.

He grabbed hold of a plate from the kitchen, bashed it on Noraishah’s head and dragged her into their bedroom before kicking her on the leg and backside.

Noraishah also suffered injuries to her hand, body and face. She managed to escape from the house and seek help from relatives before lodging a police report.

Inspector Yunus Sahak prosecuted while the accused was unrepresented.
