KUCHING: All information disseminated to the people must be done responsibly.

Assistant Minister of Youth Development (Rural) Datuk Dr Stephen Rundi Utom said this was important in order to prevent confusion within the target group.

“In disseminating information, especially in the rural areas, we must be careful so that the information does not confuse the people. We must discharge our duties with the highest responsibility to avoid creating problems in the society,” said Dr Rundi at the Chief Minister ‘s ICT Media Awards presentation ceremony on Thursday.

He was representing the chief minister to officiate at the event.

Dr Rundi, who is also Assistant Minister of Public Utilities (Electricity and Telecommunications), added that all information must also be precise, short and simple to make it easily digestible.

On a related matter, Dr Rundi stressed that in order for the state to achieve Vision 2020, digital divide between urban and rural areas must be resolved.

“We want youths in rural areas to be familiar with ICT and be computer literate, but at the same time, they must also know how to maintain the computers.”

To achieve this end, the government had implemented technology-based programmes such as ‘Wireless Villages’.

“Sarawak has moved a few steps ahead in terms of ICT compared to other states. Our Land and Survey Department is the first to use the Lasis system, which is the fastest in issuing land titles and land search.”

Meanwhile, Sarawak Information Systems (SAINS) chief executive officer Datuk Teo Tien Hiong said the annual award was very important as it served as a platform for those involved to disseminate information about technology used in the print and electronic media.

The event was jointly organised by SAINS, Federation of Sarawak Journalist Association and Kuching Division Journalist Association.
