KOTA KINABALU: Two men sustained serious injuries when the lorry they were traveling in landed on its side after going over a traffic island and hitting a tree in the process at Jalan Tuaran Lama, Menggatal yesterday.

According to the lorry driver, identified as Dila in his 40s, he and two of his colleagues were heading towards Kampung Tobobon from the city when a Perodua Kancil car crossed the lorry’s path around 4pm.

“I was heading back home after work and driving on the left lane, tailing the Perodua Kancil car.

“I tried to overtake the Kancil car by going to the right lane, but the car also turned to the right.

“When the Kancil car was on the right lane, the driver suddenly braked and turned the car back to the left lane,” Dila claimed.

“Because the Kancil car swerved to the right lane and back again to the left lane, I immediately stepped on the brake to avoid hitting the back of the Kancil and lost control of the lorry,” he said when met at the scene yesterday.

Dila said the lorry then went up the road island and rammed into a tree before into landing on its side.

Two of his passengers suffered serious injuries while Dila only suffered minor injuries.

“Passers-by then came to our aid and took my colleagues to the hospital in a van,” he said, adding that the Perodua Kancil car just sped off without stopping.

Meanwhile, city traffic and public order chief DSP Peter Anak Umbuas, who was at the scene with DSP A. Sahak Rahmat, said police are still carrying out investigation as well as to identify the said Kancil car.

He also urged eyewitness to come forward to assist police in their investigation.
