BINTULU: Public servants and leaders must strive to do their best and be proactive in serving  the community in order to obtain the people’s trust.

Bintulu member of parliament Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing said this during a ‘Majlis Mesra Bersama Rakyat’ at a hotel here on Saturday night.

The meet-the-people event which was attended by over 100 people was jointly organised by the Information Department and 1Malaysia Community Bintulu Division.

Tiong added many people could not really understand the aims of  ‘meet-the-people’ sessions organised by the government.

“This is the platform where the people can get close to the government officers, this is where dialogue to solve various issues faced by the community and be held,” explained Tiong who is also the deputy president of Sarawak Progressive Democratic Party (SPDP).

He urged members of the 1Malaysia Community and Information Department to go to the ground more often to disseminate information especially on government development policies.

The MP also encouraged the 1Malaysia Community to move aggressively to cover all residential areas and not just recruit their friends and relatives only.

If possible, he said the members should set membership targets so that the community could grow healthier and stronger.

Also present at the function were Senator Datuk Pau Chiong Ung, Deputy Resident (Social) Richard Michael Abunawas, officers from Information Department Miri and Bintulu and other local community leaders.
