NEW PUMP SET SOON: Fatimah (third right) presents the project to Andrew Gan, the manager of GS-Tech Engineering while director of Welfare Department, Noriah Ahmad (right) and others look on.

MUKAH: The Oya High Level Tank will have two new units of re-lift pumps to ensure enough water for local residents.

Minister of Welfare, Women and Family Development Datuk Fatimah Abdullah said the pumps would replace the existing ones which had the power of only 18kilowatts.

“The new 22-kw pumps can fill up the 18-cubic metre tanks in just under one hour,” she told reporters after handing over the project costing RM40,000 to GS-Tech Engineering Sdn Bhd yesterday. The project was undertaken under the Minor Rural Projects (MRP).

Fatimah, who is also Dalat assemblywoman, said the ability to fill up the tanks faster was an important factor in enabling water to be evenly distributed to local residents.

“This is especially crucial during Hari Raya and other festivals when water usage is heavy.

“There are eight villages with 5,466 people in the area. My conservative estimate is that the water usage during Hari Raya is at least three times more than usual,” she said.

Also present at the function was the director of Welfare Department, Noriah Ahmad.
