KUALA LUMPUR: iM4U mentor Tan Sri Michelle Yeoh firmly states “No woman has to be a victim of abuse” when kick-starting the iM4U Street Watch campaign here recently, in collaboration with RapidKL, to raise awareness on the safety of women on public transportation.

With this first project as an iM4U mentor, Tan Sri Michelle has turned the spotlight on one of the concerns of the Malaysian public. She aims to rally all Malaysians to pledge their support for the Women’s Safety and Respect for Women campaign.

Under the umbrella of iM4U’s mentorship programme, Yeoh believes that it is important to educate the public and instil a sense of pro-activeness among Malaysians to make our country a safer place for all.

With her input, iM4U has developed a series of 5 pledges and 5 tips to be shared via social media platforms and promotion with the support of RapidKL on its various transportation networks.

Throughout the month of September, iM4U in partnership with RapidKL will also be conducting various safety awareness programmes including the placement of iM4U volunteers at selected LRT stations to help escort women to their vehicles.

Murali Dharan “Moots” Marimuthu, director of Content Creation and Integration declared that “iM4U is excited to kick-start our mentorship programme with this Street Watch campaign. Our volunteers are all geared up to spread awareness on such an important issue.”

During the launch, Yeoh joined volunteers on the LRT in distributing safety packs which include a whistle and cards with safety tips to women passengers. She also encouraged them to help spread the message and support the campaign by starting a chain of awareness whereby each person who pledges will also commit to getting at least one other person to pledge.

At the same time, Yeoh helped to draw the attention of the public to the facilities currently provided by RapidKL to ensure the safety of its passengers like panic buttons, female only parking bays, CCTV coverage as well auxiliary police and undercover police in and around public transportation to ensure safe travel.

Yeoh was joined at the campaign by Puan Masnizam Hisham, Group director for Infrastructure Services of Syarikat Prasarana Negara Berhad (Prasarana), the owner and operator of RapidKL.

“Prasarana and RapidKL are proud to collaborate with iM4U for this initiative. We are committed to the safety and security of our guests, ensuring they have a pleasant experience while travelling with us,” Masnizam said.

RapidKL manages an average ridership of more than 700,000 commuters – 428,000 on the LRTs, 71,000 on the KL Monorail and another 300,000 on RapidKL buses.
