Inaugural IPT Sarawak Zone Petanque Championship

KUCHING: One hundred players are in the fray for the inaugural Institutes of Higher Learning (IPT) Sarawak Zone Petanque Championship at Kampung Santubong petanque field this weekend.

According to the organising committee spokesman, Roley Lagir from Kuching Community College, the event had attracted 70 entries for the IPT category and another 30 for the open category.

For the IPT category, entries were received from UiTM, Politeknik Kuching, Unimas, Kuching Community College, Santubong Community College, Mas Gading Community College and Betong Community College.

Roley said Kuching Community College had been made the IPT Centre of Excellence for Petanque in Sarawak and were tasked to organise this event.

Each of the competitions is divided into four categories and they are singles, doubles, triples and mixed doubles.

“The top four finishers of each category shall represent Sarawak at the Grand Finals in Selangor from Oct 25 to 27,” he revealed.

In the case that any of the top four finishers are unable to go to the grand finals, the fifth-placed team shall be the replacement.

The qualification for the national IPT petanque championship is divided into six zones.

They are Sarawak, Sabah, Eastern Zone (Pahang, Terengganu and Kelantan), Central Zone (Perak and Selangor), Northern Zone (Penang, Kedah and Perlis) and Southern Zone (Negeri Sembilan, Melaka and Johor).

The IPT Sarawak Zone Petanque Championship will be opened by the Malaysian Community College Sports Council secretary Abdul Razak Sabtu today at 10am and the closing ceremony will be graced by Pantai Damai assemblyman Dr Abdul Rahman Junaidi tomorrow at 4pm.
