KOTA KINABALU: Police confiscated about 10 kilograms of syabu worth about RM2.4 million in three suitcases during separate raids on a house and an apartment here recently.

Sabah Police Commissioner Datuk Hamza Taib yesterday said the raids were made on November 19-20 on a house at Taman Nelly, Inanam and an apartment at 1Borneo, Jalan Sulaman following tip-offs.

Hamza said that in the first raid at Taman Nelly, police detained a suspect who was alighting from a Volkswagen vehicle in front of the house around 9.30pm on Tuesday.

“The suspect was seen carrying a suitcase and upon inspection, police found two packets containing a white substance believed to be syabu weighing 1,001 grams.

“The suspect was immediately detained and taken to the house for further inspection.

“As police approached the house, they found the house grille locked but the sliding door open, and saw another man who immediately ran up to the top floor of the house.

“Police then forced open the grille and stormed into the house, and found the occupant (second suspect) in a room on the top floor preparing to jump from a window.

“The second suspect jumped from the window but injured both his legs when he landed on the pavement.

“He was subsequently detained by the police,” Hamza told a press conference at the state police headquarters in Kepayan here yesterday.

Hamza said the police then searched the house and found another branded suitcase containing 85 grams of syabu, a wallet and a Bruenaian passport in a bag.

Further investigation also led the police to several items such as aluminum foils, four straws and weighting scales, he added.

Hamza said both suspects were then taken to the city police headquarters for interrogations which led police to an apartment at 1Borneo the next day.

“During the raid on the apartment, the police found a branded suitcase containing 8,917 grams of syabu,” he said.

Hamza said both suspects, a 32-year-old local man and a 35-year-old Brunei national, were remanded for further investigation.

He added that the police investigation also showed the Bruneian man was wanted by the Brunei police.

Apart from the drugs, police also confiscated three luxury vehicles, namely a BMW, a Volkswagen car and a Mitsubishi car, and a Yahama motorcycle all valued at RM630,000.

Hamza said the initial police investigation revealed that the suspects had been operating the drug syndicate for some eight months before they were arrested.

He said the case would be investigated under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drug Act 1952 which carries the death penalty upon conviction.
