SMC mobile library reaches out to rural children

SIBU: The mobile library of the Municipal Council (SMC) here is helping to promote the reading habit among rural children by bringing to them 1,000 books.

Municipal librarian Habsah Johor was of the opinion that the initiative would bridge the disparity of the reading habit between urban and rural pupils.

“The library goes to 25 rural primary schools, mostly in Selangau and its surrounding areas.

“We are reaching out to these pupils to inculcate the reading habit among them,” she told reporters yesterday.

Habsah said it was a daily service introduced in 1995.

“Our mobile library, which is a bus, has a driver and two assistants.

“Every day, they will leave from here at 8am for various destinations. They visit each of the schools once a fortnight since the loaning of books is for two weeks,” she explained.

“Many rural schools which we don’t go to have asked us to go to them as well. We may need another bus in time to come,” she said.
