KAPIT: Members of Kapit Zhan Clan Association have been told not to expect any rewards for giving their time and energy to the association.

They were also reminded not to ask what the association could do for them.

“Instead, ask what you can do for the association,” said its chairman Chong Shin Khin at the installation of the main and Youth committees of the association for the 2014-2015 term, here on Saturday.

“It is important for us to develop the sense of belonging, love, loyalty, pride and be service orientated.”

The guests of honour were Federated World Zhan Clan Association president Datuk Tiong Su Kock and Bintulu Zhan Clan association chairman Tiong Meng Kwong, who represented Bintulu MP Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing.

The gathering at Meligai Hotel also saw the presentation of ‘angpow’ to 12 senior members who are 65 years old and above, and distribution of cash incentives to 14 outstanding students who had done well in school and public examinations last year.

Chong said leading an association to the path of greatness is not an easy task, and thus hoped all its 200 odd members would work together, set aside their personal agenda and sink whatever differences they might have.

“For us to grow requires a high spirit of sacrifice and strong spirit of volunteerism.

“Be humble and accommodative, and always cooperate with one another,” he stressed, adding that it was important for the association to do well as it had to look after the socio-welfare needs of its members.

On the presentation of `angpow’ to the senior members, Chong said the recipients had played their roles in helping to mould a healthy and strong family institution in terms of giving their children good education, developing their living skills, and instill in them high moral values.

“Without their sacrifice, we would not be what we are today. They are the architect of life, and now that they are old it is our responsibility to honour, respect and care for them.”

On the cash incentives for the students, he said it was meant to motivate them to continue to study hard and do well in their studies.

Also present were Sarikei Zhan Clan Association chairman Tiong Kai Hwa, Sarawak Federated Zhan Clan Youth chief Tiong Ee King, organising chairman Tiong Siew Chong and advisor Tiong Leong Ee.
