KUCHING: Kuching Division Journalists Association (KDJA) held an international culture-themed media appreciation night at Hilton Hotel here Friday.

Held in collaboration with the Ministry of Women, Family and Community Development, the media fraternity was reminded by KDJA president Sulok Tawie about their role as a vital bridge of information.

“We are trusted to be a reliable bridge of information to be disseminated to the public and issues that can cause ill feeling or racial discomfort must be curbed and we must remember how Sarawak has been enjoying racial harmony for so many years,” he said.

Meanwhile, Minister of Women, Family and Community Development Datuk Rohani Abdul Karim who was present at the event hoped that the strong relationship between the media and government would be long-lasting.

“The relationship between the media and the government can be described with the Malay idiom ‘bagai aur dan tebing’ (like bamboo roots and the riverbank), which is important in sending a clear message to the people in the country.

“Therefore, I hope that this relationship will be long-lasting without boundaries in giving accurate, authentic, current and quick information and responses,” she said.

A lucky draw and a karaoke competition were also in the programme for the night.

Among those present were Balai Ringin assemblyman Snowdan Lawan, Ministry of Women, Family and Community Development chief secretary Dato Sri Dr Noorul Ainur Mohd Nur, Commonwealth Journalists Association Sarawak branch acting chairperson Alice Wee, chief political secretary to the chief minister Abdullah Saidol, Assistant Minister of Environment Len Talif and Sarawak Lawn Tennis Association president Dato Patrick Liew.
