PAS Dewan Ulama chief Harun Taib dies

KUALA TERENGGANU: PAS’ Dewan Ulama chief Datuk Harun Taib, 71, died at the Sultanah Nur Zahirah Hospital (HSNZ) here at 12.17am yesterday.

His son, Manir state assemblyman Hilmi Taib, said his father died of organ failure due to diabetes.

“He had a stroke in 2010. His diabetes worsened this year compounded by viral infection including to his kidney although his blood and heart were stable,” he said.

Harun’s remains were brought to his village in Manir and buried at the Alur Lerang Private Cemetery at 11am.

He leaves behind a wife and five children.

About 5,000 people including Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Datuk Seri Jamil Khir Baharom, Communication and Multimedia Deputy Minister Datuk Jailani Johari, Terenggaanu state assembly speaker Mohd Zubir Embong and Kelantan Menteri Besar Datuk Ahmad Yaakob paid their last respects to him.

Harun was a four-term state assemblyman for the Manir state seat from 1982 (6th general election) to 2004 (11th general election). — Bernama
