KOTA KINABALU: A self-employed man was charged with four counts of cheating and one count for fraudulent possession of MyKads, at the magistrates’ court here yesterday.

In the first count, Rosli Haji Kassim, 60, had allegedly induced Harijah Jul, 31, to hand over RM151 in cash by saying that she could get a job at the National Registration Department, on Jan 10 at around 11pm in Kampung Air.

The offence under Section 420 of the Penal Code carries imprisonment of up to ten years, and with whipping, and liable to a fine, upon conviction.

On the second, third and fourth counts, he had conned the same victim, of RM188, RM38 and RM50, respectively, using the same method between Jan 11 and Jan 13, at the same place.

The accused pleaded not guilty to all the charges against him before magistrate Ryan Sagirann Rayner Jr, who set Feb 26 for his case management.

He faced another charge for possessing the MyKads of Abdul Basil Bin Mohd Amin and Jiji Bin Maiting on Jan 28, at around 3.09pm, behind the premises of Maybank, Kampung Air.

The charge, framed under Section 25 (1) (o) of the National Registration Regulations 1990, carries a fine of between RM3,000 and RM20,000, or a jail term of up to three years or both, upon conviction.

For this case, the court set Feb 25, for the accused’s case management.

Prosecuting officer Inspector Syahrin Ali had objected bail for the accused as he faces another charge for illegal entry into the State and on the grounds that he faces the charge for fraudulent possession of MyKads.

The accused was also previously convicted and sentenced to 24 months’ jail for cheating charges on Nov 12, 2010 and was then referred to the Immigration Department for not possessing proper documents.

The court ordered for Rosli to be further remanded in custody, pending disposal of his case.
